Tsietsi My Hero Tuesday, June 16 SABC3, 1pm This documentary by film maker, poet and photographer Portia Rankoane reacquaints the youth of today with the sad but inspiring story of a young man who dared to stand up to oppression.

Tsietsi My Hero tells the tragic tale of Teboho “Tsietsi” MacDonald Mashinini.

A pupil at Morris Isaacson High School, Mashinini made headlines as the leader of the June 16 1976 protests that turned violent and resulted in the death of many of his peers.

After being on the apartheid state’s most wanted list, Mashinini fled the country and remained an unsung hero until his mysterious death in 1990. – Siyabonga Sithole
