Epic battle of the lip-sync pretenders
Celebrities gathered at the Hard Rock Café in Sandton on Thursday night for the launch of the hugely popular international MTV Lip Sync Battle, which is coming to local TV screens.
Lip Sync is a competition for laughs that pits celebrities against each other in a lip-sync showdown of epically unimportant proportions.
The local version of the show was hosted by MTV Base VJ Sizwe Dhlomo. Guest judge for the evening was radio personality Mo Flava, who got to size up his industry buddies’ skills as they battled each other for the MTV trophy.
The first challenge of the night saw Khanyi Mbau go head-to-head with actress Amanda Du-Pont. Dressed in black – like a true rock star – Mbau danced her way to victory by lip-syncing to Busiswa’s Lahla.
Radio DJ Thando “Thabooty” Thabethe tried to use her dance moves to win her round. But that didn’t work and she failed to walk away with the MTV trophy. Reigning Miss SA Liesl Laurie was ready to do battle, but was defeated by the sultry Jessica Nkosi.
The battle reached its climax when YFM DJ Ankletap and comedian Tall Ass Mo went to war.
The pair took the evening from a Lip Sync Battle to a comedy showdown as they trashtalked each other.
Jokes aside, the pair actually managed to pull off a stellar performance, drawing the women on to the stage and getting the crowd cheering for more.
Tall Ass Mo may have walked away with the trophy, but Ankletap ran circles around him in the battle for laughs.
The other celebrities who came out, mainly to enjoy the hilarious performances, included MTV’s Nomuzi Mabena, Lex “Dr Smile” Leo and rapper Tumi Molekane of Tumi and the Volume. The MTV Lip Sync Battle screens on MTV (DStv channel 130) on Thursdays at 8.50pm and MTV Base (DStv channel 322)
on Fridays at 4pm
