5FM showcases Mandela Month

This week, DJs from 5FM gathered at the Doppio Zero restaurant in Sandton to play games and bring awareness to their chosen Mandela Day cause: child literacy.

After a delicious, and seemingly unending lunch, and some topnotch service from the staff at the restaurant, the radio personalities got down to the business of playing literacy-related games, including Scrabble and Pictionary, for 67 minutes.

The group included Nicole da Silva, DJ Milkshake, Nick Hamman, Poppy Ntshongwana, Ms Cosmo and Tumi Voster, who were all competing for bragging rights.

While the drawing and spelling skills of all involved were not exactly worthy of a Picasso or Wordsworth, the team was enthusiastic. All who attended agreed that it was important for those with influence to give back – particularly on Mandela Day, but also every day.

While most of the team jetted off to the MTV Africa Music Awards on Saturday, what remained of the 5FM team continued the literacy campaign in another event at Constitution Hill on Friday.

Equipped with reading corners for the DJs to read to kids, as well as a book drive for ReadSA, it’s been an all-Mandela week for them.

Friday’s event included a live broadcast from Constitution Hill and listeners were encouraged to call in and support the cause.
