Face-lift for The Laager

The Mar­ket Theatre in New­town has fi­nally re­opened its Laager Theatre sec­tion af­ter 18 months of ren­o­va­tions. Known dur­ing apartheid as a rel­a­tively safe space to per­form strug­gle plays, the Laager was named by iconic lo­cal per­former Pi­eter-Dirk Uys in 1979. It re­mains a plat­form for young tal­ents to ex­press and show­case their skills.

Two award-win­ning young di­rec­tors have been se­lected to stage Can Themba and Bar­ney Si­mon plays. Di­rec­tor Khayelihle Dom Gumede is cur­rently of­fer­ing Themba’s Cre­pus­cule and Clive Mathibe will tackle Si­mon’s Cincinnati – Scenes from City Life from Au­gust 19. – Grethe Koen Go to mar­ketthe­atre.co.za for more info and to book tick­ets
