Face-lift for The Laager
The Market Theatre in Newtown has finally reopened its Laager Theatre section after 18 months of renovations. Known during apartheid as a relatively safe space to perform struggle plays, the Laager was named by iconic local performer Pieter-Dirk Uys in 1979. It remains a platform for young talents to express and showcase their skills.
Two award-winning young directors have been selected to stage Can Themba and Barney Simon plays. Director Khayelihle Dom Gumede is currently offering Themba’s Crepuscule and Clive Mathibe will tackle Simon’s Cincinnati – Scenes from City Life from August 19. – Grethe Koen Go to markettheatre.co.za for more info and to book tickets
