Lupita shares the joy of Soi

CityPress - - Voices -

With just about every designer on earth clamouring for her attention, actress Lupita Nyong’o is positively spoilt for choice.

But it was Kenyan designer Michael Soi who caught her eye with his range of artistic Afropop bags.

Nyong’o took to Instagram to share two of his bags with her millions of followers, gaining about 48 000 likes and making Soi an instant fashion favourite worldwide.

Soi, who is first and foremost a renowned visual artist, turned his artistic skill into a series of authentically Kenyan, fashion- forward tote bags that celebrate the black female identity and Africa’s place in the 21st-century fashion world.

Despite a flood of enquiries for the bags, Soi is determined to stay true to his talent and took to his Facebook page to say his intention was not to advertise bags but to share his idea of art. He intends to make each bag by hand and told buyers they might have to wait up to three months if they wanted quality. – Binwe Adebayo Check Soi out online at studioafrica.tum
