The SA National Boxing Association (Sanabo) is counting on boxers Ntethelelo Ngema and Nyawo Cedric to do well in the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games, which take place in Samoa from September 5-11.

According to Sanabo president Andile Mofu, the 18-year-old fighters from KwaZulu-Natal made a name for themselves when they represented the country in the Region 5 Youth Games in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in November.

They both won gold medals in their divisions.

Now they will join athletes in other sporting codes to represent South Africa at the Youth Games.

Ngema fights as a lightweight while Cedric slugs it out in the middleweight class.

“Both have been selected because they stood above the rest in Zimbabwe,”said Mofu.

“We would have loved to have featured more boxers, but decided on Ngema and Cedric. The strict selection criteria allows for only two fighters in the boxing slot.”

He said neither fighter would be considered for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games because of their ages.

“They are not yet ready for Rio because they are very young.

“By 2020, they will hopefully be fit and prepared to participate in the Olympics in Tokyo. This is great because they are our stars of the future,” said Mofu.

He added that the boxing team for Rio had not yet been finalised.

“The elite team has to qualify through the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar, in December. “It will also depend on the boxers’ performances in the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo, from September 4-19,” said Mofu The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee named the team for the Youth Games this week.

South Africa will compete in six of the nine sporting codes – athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rugby sevens, tennis and swimming.
