Putting Zakes Mda’s words to music
Zakes Mda’s The Heart of Redness takes to the stage at The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town.
The bestselling book will leap to life as a musical in a series of performances from August 19 to August 22.
The work is one of the acclaimed novelist’s most popular books and will be reincarnated for the stage by a 15-member cast, comprising members of the Magnet Theatre, University of Cape Town drama school graduates and the operatic talents of the Cape Town Opera.
The production’s director, Mark Fleishman, shared his ideas for what the production would be like.
“The Heart of Redness is hard to define and package neatly under a single, unambiguous descriptor. And that is exactly what we are trying to achieve – a something in-between that takes cognisance of various styles without settling comfortably into any one of them.”
While the production is intended to showcase opera, the traditional elements of Mda’s original text will direct the way it is handled. Tickets range from R100 to R190
and are available at computicket.com. Visit capetownopera.co.za for more
