AUGUST 13 2012
This was the bloodiest day ahead of the massacre. On-duty rock-drill
operator Julius Langa was found dead in the morning – he had been stabbed 18 times. Striking mine workers were turned away from
Lonmin’s K3 shaft. As they made their way to the koppie, they were stopped by police
and asked to drop their weapons. They refused. Stun grenades and tear
gas were used on the group. Just after midday, two police officers, Tsietsi Monene and Sello Lepaaku, were hacked to death.
Solomon Baloy was seriously injured. Striking workers Tembelakhe
Mati, Goodman Jokanisi and Phumzile Sokanyile were also killed
during clashes with the police.
