Isaiah Twala, an NUM shop steward, was shot and hacked to death on the koppie, and the skull of a
cow was placed on his chest. Meanwhile, Lonmin security staff were working to identify armed strikers who could be seen on
security videos. It emerged later that Cyril Ramaphosa had been sending emails to Lonmin officials, and then police and mineral resources ministers Nathi Mthethwa and Susan Shabangu, respectively, about taking “concomitant action” against the striking workers. Police went to the koppie to negotiate with the striking mine workers to
bring about a voluntary laying down of weapons.
