I will sup­port the Spring­boks even if few black play­ers make the cut. Trans­for­ma­tion in rugby is not of coach Heyneke Meyer’s mak­ing but is deep-rooted. Even the few black play­ers who wear the na­tional team colours are “blacks” from priv­i­leged Model C schools. Those in the Spring­bok team are not your typ­i­cal black boys from the town­ships. I don’t think Meyer is racist. I be­lieve he was caught in a bad sit­u­a­tion, where he had to master a very dif­fi­cult bal­anc­ing act – there is an abun­dance of good white play­ers play­ing at the high­est level, and few black faces.
