Adidas gets kasi treatment
Being asked to collaborate with Adidas is no joke. The world’s biggest celebs – from Pharrell to Rita Ora to Kanye West – have paired with the legendary sports brand to create artist-inspired gear for fans and Adidas-heads alike.
Now, local design trio The Sartists are joining this illustrious list, with an Adidas Originals collaboration that is both slick and sporty, but also quirky and quintessentially South African. Kabelo Kungwane, Xzavier Zulu and Wanda Lephoto have been informally playing around with customised Adidas gear for some time, but now it’s official. They recently released their versions of the classic three-striped shelltoe sneaker in Braamfontein. And the lookbook is just delicious.
Shot by one of South Africa’s best street photographers, Andile Buka, who knows colours and angles like no other, it’s as much about the crew and street culture as it is about the Adidas clothes themselves. Set on a crimson background and featuring some familiar local salon scenes, it’s a fresh take on the traditionally quite serious, static lookbook format.
The group is planning a short film to showcase their collection. Check out sartists.blogspot.com
