Jolie quit Princess Diana’s char­ity

An­gelina Jolie re­signed as a trustee from a land mine-clear­ing char­ity the late Princess Diana made fa­mous af­ter she dis­cov­ered the trustees paid them­selves £500 (R10 500) a day.

The Times news­pa­per says the Halo Trust works in 16 coun­tries. It made head­lines af­ter Princess Diana vis­ited an An­golan minefield.

The news­pa­per said that Jolie re­signed in May last year af­ter be­com­ing “un­com­fort­able” with the cash the char­ity spent on a re­view, in­clud­ing “struc­tural, re­mu­ner­a­tion and gov­er­nance ar­range­ments”.

She also ques­tioned the trust’s pol­icy of mak­ing “sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions” to­wards the board­ing school fees of the chil­dren of some of its staff.

“She left be­cause she was ex­tremely un­com­fort­able with the ac­tions of the trustees. The main thing was the trustees pay­ing them­selves,” said a source.

Halo Trust chief ex­ec­u­tive James Cowan said Jolie had joined in a unan­i­mous vote in favour of the gov­er­nance re­view and her res­ig­na­tion let­ter said she wanted to “do other things”. –
