The illustrated women

For the past two years, designer, illustrator and entrepreneur David Tshabalala has used August to pay tribute to the strong, talented and boundary-pushing women of South Africa.

This year sees a whole new group of women being honoured, including sensual chanteuse Moonchild Sanelly, activist and writer Panashe Chigumadzi, and graphic designer/singer-songwriter Nonku Phiri.

Tshabalala says of his illustrations: “With so much negative stuff that’s going on in our country ... I wanted to do something positive that people can walk away from feeling good.”

He follows (and they follow him) most of the women he illustrates on social media. They usually feel honoured when he tells them he is going to illustrate them.

Tshabalala plans on continuing the series every year from now on.

His bold, brightly coloured drawings honour women without stereotyping or trivialising them the way so many Women’s Month campaigns do, and for that #Trending has to give him a big-up.
