Big ups at the Basas

City Press bagged seven awards at this year’s Na­tional Arts Fes­ti­val and Busi­ness and Arts SA Awards (Basas), in­clud­ing arts jour­nal­ist of the year and best arts pub­li­ca­tion.

Th­ese awards were con­cep­tu­alised and launched in 2013 to ac­knowl­edge some of the work be­ing done by arts jour­nal­ists in news­rooms across the coun­try.

City Press win­ners in­cluded Gugulethu Mh­lungu and Roger Young, who won sil­ver awards in the fea­tures cat­e­gory; Grethe Koen and Lwandile Fikeni, who won gold awards in the same cat­e­gory; and Gar­reth van Niek­erk, who won a gold in the news cat­e­gory.

Fikeni was the over­all win­ner and 2015 arts jour­nal­ist of the year. City Press won the award for best arts or­gan­i­sa­tion of the year.

Last year, City Press’ #Trend­ing ed­i­tor, Charl Blig­naut, was awarded the arts jour­nal­ist of the year award.
