Big ups at the Basas
City Press bagged seven awards at this year’s National Arts Festival and Business and Arts SA Awards (Basas), including arts journalist of the year and best arts publication.
These awards were conceptualised and launched in 2013 to acknowledge some of the work being done by arts journalists in newsrooms across the country.
City Press winners included Gugulethu Mhlungu and Roger Young, who won silver awards in the features category; Grethe Koen and Lwandile Fikeni, who won gold awards in the same category; and Garreth van Niekerk, who won a gold in the news category.
Fikeni was the overall winner and 2015 arts journalist of the year. City Press won the award for best arts organisation of the year.
Last year, City Press’ #Trending editor, Charl Blignaut, was awarded the arts journalist of the year award.
Commenting on the entries received, convener of the judging panel Gwen Ansell said: “The range of writers,
