Despite a terrible TV year, there were still some shows that shone. Here are our top picks, along with two epic fails: SHOW OF THE YEAR: Uzalo With about 7.6 million viewers a week, this SABC1 family drama premiered at the start of the year and is now SA’s most watched show. TALK SHOW HIT: Zaziwa With about 3.1 million viewers a week, Pearl Modiadie’s high-energy, SABC1 variety show is #Trending’s top talk offering this year. TALK SHOW FLOP: Afternoon Express The late-afternoon hour with Bonang Matheba, Jeannie D and Bonnie Mbuli on SABC3 has been a damp squib. There are no prizes for guessing why. Awkward hosts, pedestrian topics and a boring set are just a few clues.
Somizi TV SOCIAL-MEDIA MOMENT: and DJ Arch Junior With 78 million votes cast, Idols SA had its biggest season in history, and it was in no small part thanks to the addition of the flamboyant Somizi Mhlongo. Another pintsized TV star who set Twitter ablaze was SA’s Got Talent winner, three-year-old DJ Arch Junior.
