Football legend Lucas Radebe’s new bride was welcomed by his family in Diepkloof, Soweto, yesterday.

Radebe and Thobela Silver held umembeso, which is, in essence, a meeting of the families and an exchange of gifts.

In this instance, the family of the bride was meeting the groom’s to present them with gifts and dress their family members. Silver is a businesswoman. Among other people who came to support the couple were businesswoman Nkhensani Manganyi and her husband, Zam Nkosi, and businesswoman Bridget Masinga.

Silver, who was dressed in red Xhosa traditional gear, arrived in style in a Porsche. She was accompanied by family members carrying gifts such as blankets, spears, icansi and shields.

They sang traditional wedding songs, including Mosadi o Mopila so and Sivulele Singene, before they were welcomed into the Radebe home.

After they were welcomed, Radebe’s siblings and family were showered with gifts as the Silver entourage sang and ululated.

Members of the Radebe family were called up individually to be wrapped in blankets while the singing continued.

Radebe’s father, Sello, was given a navy blue jacket, as well as a scarf and a hat.

And his mum, Jerminah, was given a blanket as well as a doek, which was wrapped on her head during the ceremony. Jerminah welcomed the bride. “We are so happy to have the new makoti in our family after such a long time of not having one. We are looking forward to getting to know her more as she is humble, and a beautiful person inside and out,” she said.

Radebe’s dad added that he was also excited for his son, and was looking forward to having a new makoti in the house.

A few weeks ago in an interview with City Press, Lucas Radebe said: “What I can say is that I’m happy where I am right now and I’m enjoying life.

“Obviously, at some point, I’ll have to take another step with my family. Life has been challenging and hard, but I don’t think life is meant to be like that.”

The happy couple walked hand in hand, smiling at each other. After the intimate ceremony, the newlyweds sped off in a metallic silver Lamborghini to continue their celebrations at a private venue, not far from Radebe’s home.
