US lottery jackpot split three ways

CityPress - - News -

Imagine beating one-in-292.2 million odds ... and in the process winning your share of $1.6 billion (R27 billion).

That’s exactly what happened to three very, very lucky people in the US this week when they bought tickets for the biggest jackpot in the world.

The three winners, from California, Florida and Tennessee, have not come forward yet, but the winning numbers that made them superrich were 4, 8, 19, 27, 34 and Powerball 10. They will each receive in the region of R8.6 billion.

At one stage during the frenzied ticket-buying phase of the competition, sales for the lottery tickets were bringing in $1.3 million a minute.

In addition to the winning tickets, the California Lottery said 12 tickets matching five of the six Powerball numbers were sold for Wednesday’s draw. Those winners would get $1 million each.

But don’t feel sorry for the lottery bosses. Ticket sales for the lottery were double the payout, a sweet little profit.
