City’s four-goal hero crushes SuperSport
Thobani Mncwango scored four goals to help Polokwane City annihilate SuperSport United, while Chippa United also gained three valuable points when they beat Golden Arrows 2-0 yesterday.
Mncwango was the toast of Polokwane after his double brace in either half at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The striker netted in the 13th, 15th, 82nd and 88th minutes to record Rise and Shine’s emphatic victory over the hapless visitors, who got a consolation goal through Jeremy Brockie in the 26th minute to make the score 2-1.
But it was Mncwango’s one-man show. His feat shot him into second spot as goal scorer overall, with six goals, four behind leader Collins Mbesuma on the Absa Premiership scorers’ charts.
It’s the first time a player has netted four times in a match since Bernard Parker did it for Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu in 2012.
Polokwane got off to a flying start and found themselves 2-0 up inside the first 17 minutes. Mncwango first headed home a cross from Lebohang Motumi before finishing with a left-footed shot after good work from Jabu Maluleke.
SuperSport were rocked by their opponents’ quick start, but gradually settled into the game and gave themselves a lifeline on 27 minutes when Brockie converted Clayton Daniels’ cross in style.
Polokwane extended their advantage to 4-1 after two further goals from Mncwango in the 82nd and 88th minutes.
SuperSport could have pulled a further goal back late on when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Dove Wome, but Polokwane goalkeeper George Chigova denied Brockie from the spot.
The game saw Mark Mayambela making his debut for SuperSport after joining from Chippa United last week. He replaced Fagrie Lakay in the 55th minute, but he could do nothing to help his side.
Meanwhile, at Chatsworth Stadium, two secondhalf goals by Nkosinathi Mthiyane and Lerato Manzini were enough to give caretaker coach Dan Malesela his second victory since joining the Nelson Mandela Bay-based side Chippa United. –
