Un­der­grad­u­ate level:

Univer­sity of the Free State


Grade 12, with an ad­mis­sion point score of at least 34

Cu­mu­la­tive ad­mis­sion point score of at least 17 for math­e­mat­ics, phys­i­cal sciences and life sciences

Sub­ject to se­lec­tion (only 80 stu­dents are ac­cepted a year)

Course content First year:

Ba­sic foun­da­tion of bi­ol­ogy, chem­istry, physics and math­e­mat­ics.

Sec­ond year:

Stu­dents take mod­ules in ge­net­ics, chem­istry and foren­sic science, which in­cludes an in­tro­duc­tion to foren­sic science, crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tion, foren­sic pho­tog­ra­phy and le­gal as­pects of the ca­reer.

Third year:

Stu­dents will have var­i­ous elec­tive sub­jects in ge­net­ics or chem­istry. They are also re­quired to com­plete ad­vanced mod­ules in foren­sic science, phys­i­cal ev­i­dence, foren­sic en­to­mol­ogy and DNA foren­sics.


PayS­cale states that foren­sic pathol­o­gists earn a me­dian salary of R16 800 a month, rang­ing from R11 500 to R32 600.
