The Proteas’ frustrations over losing the current test series against England boiled over last week.

City Press’ stablemate, Rapport, has learnt that security guards had to intervene last Saturday evening when an “abusive” spectator and South African batting star Faf du Plessis almost came to blows shortly after the last day of play in the third test.

The Proteas lost the test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg by seven wickets after being skittled out for a mere 83 runs in their second innings. The defeat also meant the team lost its top position on the International Cricket Council’s rankings.

Apparently, the Protea players were getting into the team bus when a disgruntled spectator began insulting them in Afrikaans from a box close to the dressing room.

The man apparently insisted, among other things, that the South African players give his money back after their poor performance. Although most of his team-mates ignored this, Du Plessis could not stomach the mockery and challenged him to come down to the team bus.

Zunaid Wadee, the Proteas’ security chief, apparently went up to the man and started “pulling him around”.
