the statue of Cecil John Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford, won’t fall. The reason? Alumni threaten to withdraw millions in donations. This goes to the heart of what makes Western society so sick.

Chris Patten, the chancellor of Oxford, said: “Our history is not a blank page on which we can write our own version of what it should have been.”

So it’s okay for colonising criminals to acquire wealth through plunder and murder, and then play hero with the dirty money?

People find the doings of Rhodes inhuman and repulsive. It’s not about competing versions, but competing interpretations and value judgements.
