Pretoria-based Mokgadi Rasekgala (25) is the woman behind the fab, customised swimwear spotted on local stars Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha and Khanya Mkangisa.
Trading under the name Luxury Craft, Rasekgala’s business offers customisation on a range of products, from sweaters, bags and T-shirts to tank tops and the popular backless swimsuits.
Rasekgala says: “I started towards the end of last year because I have always loved customising things. I started with clothing and then I realised that I could also do it with swimwear.
“But I needed to get the word out, so I took a chance. I made a few custom pieces and sent them out to some people.”
One of these people was Matheba. Rasekgala sent her a pretty neon-pink swimsuit, which Queen B wore to her vacay in Mauritius with her bestie. Soon, other celebrities were seen wearing Luxury Craft swimwear.
Rasekgala says the response after only a few months of trading has been great. Her biggest seller is the neon-pink swimsuit, and the words ‘melanin’ and ‘queening’ have been the most popular in terms of customisations. It seems there is a market for choosing what words you want on your clothing, and you’re not just limited to five or eight. Depending on the garment, you can request full sentences.
So far, the marketing has largely been driven on social media, in particular Instagram. Now Rasekgala says she wants to grow her business by bringing in someone to handle media for her, as well as a seamstress to work in-house.
Rasekgala, who has a background in computer science, also recently launched a website and an online shopping platform.
“There are so many possibilities and that’s what I like so much about customisation,” she says. Prices start at R280 for the tank tops
and go up to R599 for swimwear You can see Luxury Craft’s products on Instagram at @luxury_craft, or visit and shop on
