Gumbi takes over

CityPress - - The Good Guide - Saturday, 6.30pm

SABC1’s popular game show has undergone a face-lift. Alas, the popular DJ Sbu has left and eccentric comedian Trevor Gumbi is now at the helm.

I must admit, it has taken me some time to get used to it, but I’m willing to give young Gumbi more time to grow into this new role. We’d come to expect a certain amount of charisma and charm from Sbu, and it seems unfair to expect Gumbi to be a carbon copy of his predecessor.

However, he does have big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, he seems uncomfortable at times and will need more time to find his flow.

If he injects his own crazy brand of humour into the gig, he will really add something new to the Friends Like These formula.

Andile is still around – dropping funny lines and shooting up questions in cylinders upon request – so at least that part of the old show is still intact.

The challenges that competing groups of friends go through to win that amazing cruise holiday are as entertaining as they have always been.

Keep an open mind when watching the new host and remember that Gumbi is a very funny man.

I forecast that his talent will propel the show to new heights. – Phumlani Sithebe Langa
