With the IAAF World Under-20 Championships (formerly the World Junior Championships) five months away, the jostle to achieve entry standards to the event in Poland in July is gaining momentum among junior track and field athletes.

On Wednesday, Athletics Gauteng North and Prestige College will stage their annual schools athletics meeting at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

The one-day event is expected to lay the foundation for future champions, much as it did for 19-year-old high jumper Chris Moleya, a bronze medallist at the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo, last year.

Moleya, who also bagged a bronze at last year’s SA Senior Track and Field Championship in Stellenbosch, is among the hopefuls who are chasing the July 11 qualification deadline to reach Poland.

The lad from Zebediela in Limpopo is the reigning SA Schools champion, with a personal best jump of 2.23m.

Competition is from 8am until 9.30pm on Wednesday
