SA’s sexiest coffee?

CityPress - - The Good Guide -

The Grind Coffee Company in Melrose Arch, Joburg, has been welcoming a lot of eager coffee lovers through its doors.

In addition to the pretty good coffee, its signature drink is fabulous. Dubbed the Grind Cone, the drink is a macchiato or an espresso (depending on what you’re in the mood for) served inside an ice cream cone “cup”.

But wait, there’s more. The inside of the ice cream cone is covered in dark and white chocolate to make for a warm, chocolatey, crispy treat.

The cones are made by World’s Best Brittle, a local company run by Simone Mann. They are pretty special – they are custom-made for The Grind Coffee Company and are under provisional trademark.

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. There was some spillage as the coffee melted through the chocolate and the cone.

“It took us a while to figure that out,” creator Dayne Levinrad told Eat Out magazine. “At first, we had people spilling – I had to replace quite a few coffees. But we’ve now found a recipe that works.”

As beautiful as the Grind Cone is, you don’t have a lot of time to stare at it or take pictures of it for Instagram because the rules are you need to consume its chocolatey caffeine goodness in three minutes – so this treat is not for novices.

And just how popular is the Grind Cone?

“We opened a month ago and we’ve been so busy we can’t keep up with demand,” Levinrad said.
