Do like I say, and as I do. That is the message Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan displayed to his counterparts. After the state of the nation address last Thursday, Gordhan boarded an economy flight to Joburg. In this time of austerity measures, where every rand saved matters, this lesson should be learnt by other ministers and premiers that you arrive safely at the destination even if you fly economy. Just like many African leaders who are not willing to relinquish power, President Yoweri Museveni’s Ugandan government banned social media as elections were taking place. In justifying this, Museveni defended the ban as a “security measure to avert lies ... intended to incite violence and illegal declaration of election results”. Social media is part of the new world and Museveni should afford it – and democracy – a chance.
