The word ‘khula’ means “to grow”. After almost two years, the Khula bag-art project is looking to do just that. The initiative is all about showcasing local talent and giving the buyer a beautiful one-of-a-kind local art piece in the form of one of its beautiful bags. Khula bags feature up-and-coming artists. Founder Moniek van Erven says the project serves as a platform to introduce these artists to a global audience.

“The bags are ethically produced by a small manufacturer in Cape Town, and we use locally sourced materials only. We have now designed our second collection: a unisex range called ‘I am a piece of art’, with shoppers, satchels, holdalls, carryalls, laptop bags and backpacks.”

Khula features art by photographers and painters Anastasia Pather, Kwanele Mboso, Audrey Anderson, Tanisha Bhana and David Theron, who get a share from the sales of the bags.

The artists’ paintings, illustrations, graffiti and photographs are reproduced by

BAG ART digital print or hand-painted directly on to the bags. Each bag carries with it an insight into the work and background of the artist, whichw allows the owner to engage directly with the works of art and hopefully spread the word about those involved.

Khula currently has a Kickstarter campaign running to raise the R1 million needed to finance the production of a second collection, and there are various ways to get involved and support them. Supporters (called “backers”) will receive art prints, any of the new bags, or even an original work of art by one of the artists in return for support. Options for backers include R82 (which earns an award of eternal gratitude), R530 for the reward of an art print on canvas, between R1 323 and R2 381 for the reward of a bag, and between R13 230 and R25 578 for the reward of the bag plus an original work of art of your choice.
