In celebration of his 10th year in the business, local fashion maverick Thula Sindi has released a fresh new range and started production from a new studio in his home town in North West. Gugulethu Mhlungu gives him a call to learn about his plans for the
Designer Thula Sindi, who celebrates 10 years in fashion this year, has released a beautiful, mature and sexy collection bursting with colour, and soft yet strong floral prints. The collection plays with flirty hemlines, lace and flowers in a way that makes for a fun but elegant collection. It comes in a palette of army green, cream white, various shades of light brown and orange, pink and black satin with red florals, and even cerulean tie-dye.
I ask him for the name of the collection and he laughs. “I am not a namer of things. It’s just the 2016 Collection, but if I had to, I would go with something like Subtle Beauty ... I love florals and I think I am trying to deseasonalise them and show they are not only for spring. I like the idea of faded flowers, like in those old muted wallpapers, teacups and tapestries. They are just great and less obvious than florals for spring. It’s nice on the eye, but also timeless.”
The acclaimed young designer is celebrating his first decade by introducing two signature handbags in the form of the T-bag Mini in ostrich and oak. Last year, he released bespoke natural cork bags.
The tie-dyed blue kaftan in the collection is the first item to be produced by the new Thula Sindi studio in his North West home town, Matlosana (Klerksdorp). By building the country’s second TS store there, he wanted to contribute to his home town while proving there is opportunity for businesses to do well outside of major urban centres.
“The [new] store is coming along great, and the plan is to open on the third of March. We will do a small show of the new collection.”
But wait, there’s more. To celebrate his 10 years, he will launch “10 interesting things. The first is the new store in Klerksdorp. Two is the studiocum-factory there. Three, I am moving studios to bigger, beautiful TS headquarters in Magnet House [in the Joburg CBD], which hopefully will be our home for the next 10 years, because it’s a whole floor. Four, I am releasing a coffee table book of the first decade of TS ... But for the six others ... you will have to keep your eyes peeled.” The 2016 Thula Sindi range is available at the Thula Sindi store at The Zone @
