The era of daily cook­ing be­ing time-con­sum­ing and com­pli­cated is long gone. Quick, value-for-money and whole­some cook­ing has steadily been gain­ing trac­tion as the way to go.

SABC3 Ex­presso Morn­ing Show res­i­dent chef Zola Nene has a new book, ti­tled Sim­ply De­li­cious. It shows us just how easy it is to make any recipe, even one that looks as fancy as her de­li­cious blue­berry cheese­cake.

“Baked cheese­cake is ev­ery­thing,” she told #Trend­ing this week. “You can­not be mak­ing cheese­cake and putting it in the fridge – for me, that’s sim­ply fridge tart. Sim­ply De­li­cious is my food jour­ney. Each recipe has a story to it. I have a pas­sion for cook­ing and I hope each recipe trans­lates into that.”

Full of love for her work, Nene says: “My culi­nary jour­ney started with my mother’s cook­ing and has de­vel­oped as I have trav­elled around the world. My palate learnt to be­come more keen to try dif­fer­ent foods. I en­rolled at a culi­nary school in Stel­len­bosch and that is where I be­gan my ca­reer as a chef.” It was dur­ing her third year at cook­ing school that Nene knew she wanted to work in food me­dia. In the same year, Ex­presso was be­ing con­cep­tu­alised and in need of a food ex­pert.

“You have to be­come cu­ri­ous about how food is made ... You’d be sur­prised how I can’t stand the smell or even the taste of ba­nanas,” the bub­bly chef tells me as we chat.

Of the recipe re­pub­lished on this page, Nene says: “I was never very fond of cheese­cake un­til I sam­pled a baked cheese­cake for the first time. It might take a while to bake, but all good things come to those who wait – and a bite of this cheese­cake is def­i­nitely worth wait­ing for.”
