Watching people watching TV
Gogglebox Sony Channel (DStv channel 127) Thursday, 9pm
South Africa is getting a new reality show, and it’s all about people watching TV. Based on the hit UK format, Gogglebox will see viewers invited into ordinary people’s living rooms to watch them voicing their unscripted opinions about what they are watching on the box – whether it’s politics, sport, news, reality TV or the latest dramas.
“This topical show is filmed seven days before the episode airs, allowing viewers to observe the households watching the week’s TV shows, encouraging up-to-date and at times controversial discussions,” says the channel.
The people we’ll get to watch include Portuguese married couple Travis and Giselle, as well as Valentine and Melissa, who enjoy spending their time doing the simple things in life, such as having dinner and drinks in front of the TV. Then there are best friends Eslina and Mirriam, who have been by each other’s sides since the age of 15. Lastly, there are sisters Tamzin and Adele, who enjoy spending time together but don’t always agree on what to watch.
Can watching other people watching TV be entertaining? We’ll have to find out. – Grethe Koen
