The 2016 Wilson R100 000 Challenge is under way at the Gauteng East Tennis Complex in Benoni.

The event, featuring open men’s and women’s matches as well as boys and girls’ Under-14 challenges, started on Wednesday (Freedom Day) and will conclude tomorrow.

The tournament is making a return since it was last staged in 2013, thanks to The Golf Racket, distributors of Wilson products in South Africa.

One of the top athletes in the world who uses Wilson products is former world number one Roger Federer, whose mother hails from South Africa.

Elated Tennis SA president Gavin Crookes praised Wilson for its involvement. “Wilson’s ongoing commitment to tennis in South Africa with a fantastic initiative such as this is commended,” he said.

“A tournament like this affords the greater tennis family not only the opportunity to participate and watch awesome top-level tennis, but also the occasion to rekindle friendships and reaffirm the passion we all have for tennis.”

Semifinals will be played today, with the finals scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Prize monies will be paid from the quarterfinals, which were played yesterday.

Junior recipients will get vouchers to the value of the allocated prize money, as the rules of tennis do not allow juniors to receive monetary rewards.
