The Play­house Com­pany is stag­ing a cel­e­bra­tion of Africa Month with a week­end of ex­hi­bi­tions, work­shops, poetry read­ings, per­for­mances and a con­cert.

First up is an expo of Africa-themed pieces cu­rated by the Dur­ban Art Gallery from its vast col­lec­tions.

Vis­i­tors can also at­tend ex­cit­ing work­shops, in­clud­ing a mu­sic ses­sion fa­cil­i­tated by Thando Nya­meni from the Kwazulu-Natal United Mu­sic In­dus­try. Dr Gcina Mhlophe, ar­guably South Africa’s fore­most sto­ry­teller, will fa­cil­i­tate a ses­sion called The Art of African Sto­ry­telling, which will see ex­pert sto­ry­tellers demon­strate their abil­i­ties. These will in­clude liv­ing leg­end Don Mat­tera (pic­tured), and award­win­ning jour­nal­ist and film maker Sylvia Vol­len­hoven. The fes­ti­val will cul­mi­nate in the Africa Cel­e­brates Con­cert, fea­tur­ing smash hit South African act Mi Casa, Pan-African phe­nom­e­non Tre­sor, Afro-soul sen­sa­tion Sim­phiwe Dana, DJ Happy Gal, the Bu­run­dian Drum­mers and the Went­worth-based hip-hop dance out­fit Dance Move­ment.
