Africa Month celebration
The Playhouse Company, Durban, Friday and Saturday All events free, except the Africa Celebrates Concert (tickets R80 to R100 at computicket.com)
The Playhouse Company is staging a celebration of Africa Month with a weekend of exhibitions, workshops, poetry readings, performances and a concert.
First up is an expo of Africa-themed pieces curated by the Durban Art Gallery from its vast collections.
Visitors can also attend exciting workshops, including a music session facilitated by Thando Nyameni from the Kwazulu-Natal United Music Industry. Dr Gcina Mhlophe, arguably South Africa’s foremost storyteller, will facilitate a session called The Art of African Storytelling, which will see expert storytellers demonstrate their abilities. These will include living legend Don Mattera (pictured), and awardwinning journalist and film maker Sylvia Vollenhoven. The festival will culminate in the Africa Celebrates Concert, featuring smash hit South African act Mi Casa, Pan-African phenomenon Tresor, Afro-soul sensation Simphiwe Dana, DJ Happy Gal, the Burundian Drummers and the Wentworth-based hip-hop dance outfit Dance Movement.
