DRC nabs leader of Rwanda geno­cide-linked rebel group

Of­fi­cials in the Demo­cratic Repub­lic of Congo (DRC) have ar­rested a se­nior leader of a rebel group linked to the 1994 Rwan­dan geno­cide.

Yes­ter­day Reuters re­ported that Gen­eral Leopold Mu­jyam­bere, chief of staff of the Demo­cratic Forces for the Lib­er­a­tion of Rwanda, was ar­rested ear­lier this week in the east­ern city of Goma dur­ing a rou­tine po­lice stop.

Lam­bert Mende, a DRC state spokesper­son, told Reuters that Mu­jyam­bere was recog­nised by some of the se­cu­rity of­fi­cials who were man­ning the road­block where the rebel leader was cap­tured.

“Mu­jyam­bere has been trans­ferred to the cap­i­tal Kin­shasa, where the mil­i­tary jus­tice sys­tem will de­cide whether to try him in Congo or ex­tra­dite him to his na­tive Rwanda,” Mende said.

AFP re­ported that Mu­jyam­bere is the sec­ond Demo­cratic Forces for the Lib­er­a­tion of Rwanda boss to be ar­rested, fol­low­ing the cap­ture, in March, of Ladis­las Nta­ganzwa.
