One of the hardest things about depression is managing other people’s advice about it. When you’re feeling absolutely numb, almost dead inside, the most difficult thing is trying to respond to people who (with unerring good intentions) tell you that you should try yoga, or watch a sunset, or that it’s just temporary and everyone feels sad at some point in their lives.

Of course, depression can be temporary if you get the proper treatment, but it’s very hard to accept that when you feel absolutely hopeless.

Hyperbole and a Half, a blog of cartoons and stories by creator Allie Brosh, is a story of the writer’s life through wonderfully comical MS Paint drawings. Brosh suffers from depression, and she uses her drawings to try to explain it to those who haven’t experienced it. So what is it like? It’s like all your fish are dead.
