Circus from down under goes way up
The Big Top Arena, Carnival City, Brakpan May 26 to June 5 The Windmill Casino, Bloemfontein June 10 to 19 Old Selbornian Club, East London June 24 to July 17 Tickets R200 to R400 at computicket.com I booked for Aussie Circus Spectacular for two reasons; my daughter begged me to and I really wanted to see a guy getting shot out of a cannon. The bonus is that it all takes place in a pukka big top circus tent, just the way it should.
The big top is all atmosphere. The smell of grass and canvas (real or imagined), the queue for tubs of popcorn and ringside seats, the children wriggling with excited anticipation.
And, when the first aerial acrobat, Lady of the Lyra Giselle, appeared, the mouths of everyone in the tent hung open with wonder as she twisted gracefully through the air.
That pretty much sums up the afternoon – mouths hanging open with wonder and regular gasps as act after act topped the one before on audacity and skill. The juggler defied gravity and the clowns were consistently hilarious. There wasn’t one misstep from the minute the ringmaster (who was a woman) stepped out to welcome the crowd to the moment the final stunt motorbike flew over the heads of the audience. Aussie Circus Spectacular is, well, spectacular. A testament to attaining skills that defy the laws of physics in the name of good entertainment.
It was two and a half hours of enchantment that was worth every cent. If this circus is still coming to a town near you, get tickets now. You’ll be blown away. Just like human cannonball Luis Daza. – Gayle Edmunds CIRCUS
