Your fave’s fave music
Before the 22nd SA Music Awards (Samas) in two weeks’ time in Durban, the organisers have asked some of the country’s most popular faces to pick 22 of their best local songs.
The results are specially curated Sama 22 Apple Music playlists by the likes of jazz legend Hugh Masekela, singer Wanda Baloyi, eight-time Sama-winning group Mafikizolo, radio and TV personalities Bonang Matheba and Anele Mdoda, North God’s Da L.E.S, last year’s four-time Sama winner DJ Clock, former Destiny Man editor Kojo Baffoe, lead vocalist of group Fokofpolisiekar Francois Van Coke, Afrikaans electronic band Die Heuwels Fantasties and others who have each curated a playlist of their favourite 22 local tracks.
Sama CEO Refiloe Ramogase said in a statement: “As South Africans, I think we don’t always appreciate quite how far we’ve come as a nation musically, and how much we owe to both pioneers and the current trailblazers. There’s such a rich repository of South African music playing on constant rotation in our heads that we thought it only fit for Sama 22 to pay tribute to this incredible music legacy, while we look forward to saluting the latest crop of industry stars and future legends on June 4 at Durban ICC.”
The playlists are a great mix of current and old school local tracks, and a selection of genres of the local scene. – Gugulethu Mhlungu
