In Mala­gasy, “ma­ha­leo” means free or in­de­pen­dent. Folk-pop group Ma­ha­leo has been rel­e­vant to the peo­ple of Mada­gas­car since the col­lapse of the colo­nial regime. This film fol­lows the singers and gives us a glimpse of the far-reach­ing so­cial and eco­nomic prob­lems of the Mala­gasy. The Ces­sa­tion ED (DStv chan­nel 190) Thurs­day, 9.25pm An­gola was sub­ject to bru­tal con­flicts for years. Thou­sands of refugees fled into neigh­bour­ing coun­tries. This short doc­u­men­tary fol­lows three mem­bers of the An­golan di­as­pora in Cape Town. It maps the ef­fect of the An­golan ces­sa­tion, which was an­nounced by the South African gov­ern­ment in 2013, and ended their refugee sta­tus from 2015. – Grethe Koen
