Do the PSL Awards really celebrate excellence?

Soccer is a game of opinions. After the conclusion of a tournament, it is common cause that executives take time out to reflect and see the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of their league.

This is the method used to measure the standard of leagues throughout the world and celebrate successes.

On Monday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) rewarded the excellence within our domestic league.

The PSL Awards included the Chairman’s Award, Best Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Best Goalkeeper, Best Goal, Top Goal Scorer and Best Young Player of the Season.

Our league is among the best in the world when it comes to marketing, players’ salaries, facilities and administration.

But many question the quality of our soccer, compared with international standards, when looking at the failure of South African players to compete on the global stage and in leagues such as the English and German ones, and the Spanish La Liga.

The failure of Bafana Bafana to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations highlights the lack of depth in our development structures.

South African teams, with the exception of Orlando Pirates, perform dismally in the CAF Champions League.

So, given this, one has to ask: Do the PSL Awards reward excellence, or are they just an annual custom?

There are also people with conflicting interests in South African football, such as the PSL chairman (Irvin Khoza), who is also a club chairman.

With South African football struggling, it is questionable that the Safa president (Danny Jordaan) is also multitasking as an executive mayor.

I would like to congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns for winning the 2015/16 Absa Premiership title.

Also kudos to Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe for doing away with the clause that prevented loaned-out players from playing against the Brazilians.

As a student of the beautiful game, I still strongly believe that there is a vast amount of untapped soccer talent in the rural areas that can be recruited and that can enhance the PSL Awards in the future.
