HANDS OFF THE DOEK

The decision taken by a line editor to remove footage of reporter Nontobeko Sibisi wearing a doek (headscarf) landed eNCA, the free-to-air TV channel, in hot water. Its staff made a call on social media for a review of the policy, deeming it to be anti-African. Sibisi said: “I put together a story on an African cross-border music collaboration of four musicians from Nigeria, Zimbabwe and South Africa.” She wore her headscarf as a symbol for the Africa Day theme week. When the footage was removed, she wrote an email to her work colleagues expressing her outrage and this sparked a social-media frenzy of hashtags including #RespekTheDoek and #DoekForNonto. The campaign went viral on Thursday and Friday, and was supported by socialites, musicians and artists internationally. They donned headscarves in solidarity, and eNCA and eNews editor in chief Anton Harber commented on 702, saying: “There are obviously some staff members who feel our policy needs review – and we’ll do that.” – Dudu Mathebula
