1Madikizela-Mandela Naomie Harris did the most with the role of Winnie

in 2013’s Long Walk to Freedom, opposite Idris Elba. The film, made by British director Justin Chadwick, starred the who’s who of South Africa’s acting talent, but again the two big leads went to foreigners. That aside, both actors scored a thumbs up from filmgoers. 2director Jennifer Hudson was Winnie in South African

Darrell Roodt’s 2011 film, Winnie Mandela. It caused an uproar: firstly, for featuring Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and Hudson, both foreigners; secondly, it got the thumbs down from the woman herself. Although Hudson was still riding high on her Oscar win for Dreamgirls when she landed the part, she does not have the acting chops for a role like this. 3made-for-TV Sophie Okonedo played Winnie for BBC4’s 2010

movie, Mrs Mandela. We have no idea how good or bad Okonedo was, as this film is nowhere to be found. It was screened three times on Channel 4 in England and, since then, seems to have ended up in a viewing black hole. It is not even for rent on the site of the channel that made it. 4Goodbye Faith Ndukwana starred as Winnie in 2007’s

Bafana, about Nelson Mandela’s relationship with his prison guard. In the film, Dennis Haysbert portrays Mandela and Joseph Fiennes is the guard, James Gregory. The film was nominated for the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear. 5 Tina Lifford, best known for her work in TV shows such as South Central, starred as Winnie in the 1997 film Mandela & De Klerk. The film starred Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine as the two leads, and was well received, garnering a Golden Globe nomination for Caine. 6 Alfre Woodard played Winnie in 1987’s predemocratic film, Mandela, which starred Danny Glover as Nelson Mandela. The film, made for US television, earned Glover an Emmy nomination. Its other notable star was John Matshikiza, who played Walter Sisulu. –

MAKE IT STOP SLAYING Supermodel Naomi Campbell went for an elegant black gown that showed off her enviable figure. A simple dress, but absolutely beautiful on her. ELEGANT Actress and musician Jennifer Hudson’s red-andblack boob tube dress was ... okay. It does what it needs to do, and that’s nothing particularly exciting.
