Oil baron and model in R5.4bn divorce wrangle
One of Britain’s biggest divorces is under way with former Pirelli calendar model, Christina Estrada, demanding an R868 000 fur coat, a R1.5 billion sevenfloor mansion in London, R87 000 for 15 pairs of sunglasses and R2.2 million for art.
The UK’s Telegraph newspaper reported that Estrada (54), who divorced her Saudi oil baron husband Walid Juffali (61), wants R5.4 billion to maintain her lifestyle of private jets, designer clothes and mansions.
But her husband’s lawyer told a British court on Friday that Estrada made “excessive and exaggerated” claims that she needs even more than a R5.4 billion settlement.
This would cover her R22.1 million annual clothing and jewellery budget, which includes R868 000 for a new fur coat every year, R2.4 million for seven haute couture dresses and R87 000 for 15 pairs of sunglasses.
This would also cover her R46 million travel budget every year.
She also wants R14 million in maintenance for their daughter.
Juffali wasn’t able to attend the court proceedings because he has stage four lung cancer. But his lawyer, Justin Warshaw QC, wrote in court papers that Estrada “is independently wealthy with a $20 million [R304 million] property in Beverly Hills, California, and a £3.5 million [R76 million] property in Kensington, London, and doesn’t need that much money”.
“Her claims are all the more extraordinary given that the assets in the case are largely inherited, or derive from the Juffali family business, started by [his] father long before the marriage,” Warshaw wrote. Juffali already pays R1.5 million a month for Estrada’s living expenses. He also pays for the running costs of her houses and more than R3 million a year in maintenance.
Estrada has already rejected a settlement of almost R700 million, the Telegraph reported.
“Her claims are striking and, we say, excessive and exaggerated,” said Warshaw.
Her clothing budget also details R1.8 million for 15 new cocktail dresses a year. For those, she needs two luxury handbags and more than R4 million for white jewellery sets – every year.
Then she needs about R1.7 million a year for jewellery to match the cocktail dresses and more than R500 000 for her cellphone. She also wants a butler, a housekeeper, a chauffeur and a nanny, as well as two cleaners, a chef and a reserve nanny, even though her daughter is at boarding school.
The couple married in 2001, but Estrada filed for divorce two years ago after finding out that her husband had secretly married a 24-year-old TV presenter, the Telegraph reported.
The judge said that Juffali “provided this family with an extraordinary standard of living” and a trial would determine “whether it’s appropriate for her to continue to use private jets when she travels, or if she must travel by scheduled carrier”.
