Hot & Not

Contrary to its self-styled label, the US is not the “leader of the free world”. But it is a leading superpower which blazed a trail by electing Barack Obama as president. Now that Hillary Clinton has won the gruelling primary to become the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, the White House is in sight.

A female president, not a First Lady, will strike one up for equality and gender empowerment. Clinton is a seasoned politician and a democrat. And, really, she trumps Trump, the racist who has his sights on the seat of Western power. While historic, the world will be anxious about which Hillary gets into office. Her history is of a drone-supporting hawk who voted for the ill-advised war on Iraq, supported the deployment of thousands of troops to Afghanistan and boxed with Russia. She does not have to continue along this path. Difficult as it was for Obama, she must aim to reduce US entanglement in wars globally. We hope her peacemaking instincts will be sharpened should she enter the White House.
