Celebs get dressed for Durban July
The Durban July – arguably South Africa’s most prestigious horse racing event – is also one of the biggest fashion dates on the country’s social calender. Over the years, those attending the grand occasion at Greyville Racecourse have graduated from outlandish getups to more sophisticated styles. This year’s theme is “leader of the pack”, and designers are hard at work creating outfits for some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Gert-Johan Coetzee will be dressing media personality Bonang Matheba, who turned heads at last year’s Vodacom Durban July in her sexy canary-yellow gown. He will also be dressing TV presenter Jeannie D. About designing for the two Afternoon Express co-hosts, Coetzee said he interpreted the dress theme to suit the individual personalities of the women so that each would make a bold statement. Popular design house Quiteria & George have been busy dressing a number of celebrities, including Lerato Kganyago, Boity Thulo, Thando Thabethe, Zama Ngcobo, Letoya Makhene and Mbali Nkosi. The popular design duo said: “The theme is about being strong, motivated to lead and an example of absolute perfection. The women wearing our creations will bring sophistication, flair and our signature silhouette to what they wear, because that is what leaders in fashion are.” After being the name behind three of Nomzamo Mbatha’s four outfits worn at the recent Simon Sabela Awards, Ri.Ch Factory will be dressing actress VJ and rapper Nomuzi Mabena for the Durban July. Rina Chunga, the creative brain behind Ri.Ch Factory, said: “I will be dressing Nomuzi for her hosting duties for Vuzu Amp on the day and for her performance at the allwhite marquee. We are in the design stage of things ... I am looking forward to dressing her as she was our first celebrity client and it has been two years since she has been in Ri.Ch Factory.” The Vodacom Durban July takes place on Saturday.
