Mumm’s the word

Premium French Champagne brand G.H. Mumm hosted an intimate gathering of buyers for its 2016 Gifting Showcase event on Thursday night.

The exclusive affair took place at home décor store Block & Chisel in Johannesburg’s Illovo suburb. Guests were treated to a tasteful, wellorganised evening that highlighted the best in alcoholic beverages.

A range of drinks was available for guests to sample. Meat lovers found a spread of delicious appetisers to pair with each beverage on offer. Unfortunately, not much thought was given to vegetarians, who were left to munch on fruit sticks and macaroons.

There were no famous faces to be seen, but this took nothing away from the classy do.

After a welcome glass of bubbly and a few long-winded speeches by various brand ambassadors, guests were left to feast their eyes on the surrounding furniture and aesthetics on display, and refresh their palates.

Brand ambassadors for G.H. Mumm – along with premium brands Martell, the French cognac house founded back in 1715; Glenlivet, also an oldie, having been founded in Scotland 1824; blended whisky house Chivas Regal; and luxury wine and spirits brand Pernod Ricard – hosted tastings of their respective products.

This was fun, but also necessary, considering gift packs came with a starting price tag of R1 500 – no doubt small change for the seasoned drinkers assembled.

Pernod Ricard’s ambassadors – some local and some from the brand’s home country of France – were particularly clued up and convivial. Given that this is the world’s secondlargest distiller, its representatives should know their stuff.

But others were not as warm and welcoming, attending only to their inner circle. At one point, they emitted a loud “Shhh” during a boring address about the history of G.H. Mumm.

While guests had a good time, credit cards were not flashed as readily as was hoped.

But the delicious tastings may be enough to get guests into liquor stores for their pre-Christmas shopping.
