Our final weekly winner!

CityPress - - Careers -

The final winner in the weekly competition is Phil Mahuma, who lives in Midlands Estate, Midstream, Gauteng.

He says: “My house is just one storey, so it is therefore easy to maintain. Last year, I painted the front wall myself. I have also learnt to repair minor wall cracks. I do all the gardening.

“Nothing goes to waste; I recycle grey water and reuse grass and other cuttings, and peels from the kitchen.

“I even use newspapers embedded in the lawn and the vegetable beds to improve water retention and to prevent soil erosion.”

Mahuma’s best tips for looking after your house are:

1. Do a little bit every day, all the bits put together make a big difference, and have fun while doing it!

2. Gain as much knowledge as possible. Be interested, ask questions, read manufacturer’s instructions, experiment creatively, do research on the internet and read books, and listen to radio programmes on DIY on Saturday mornings.

Next week, we will be asking readers to vote for their favourite weekly winner, who will take home the grand prize in this competition of R20 000 to spend on home maintenance.

This competition is run in partnership with the National Home Builders’ Registration Council.
