Greetings, Dr Haffajee
Former City Press editor Ferial Haffajee received an honorary doctorate from the University of Free State on Thursday in recognition of her role in journalism over the past 25 years. Haffajee said this was a big moment for her as she wore the gown and hat – something she missed out on when she completed her BA degree at Wits in 1989.
“Black students had boycotted the graduation ceremony and I never got to wear the gown.”
Explaining why Haffajee got the doctorate, Professor Milagros Rivera, acting dean of the humanities faculty, said: “Haffajee has made a significant contribution to press freedom in South Africa. She is known internationally for the work she has done and it is an honour to have her become a Kovsie.”
