Shakes to know fate this week

CityPress - - Sport -

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba should know his fate in the next seven days after a marathon disciplinary hearing last week.

Mashaba’s case is expected to be concluded after he takes the stand for the last time tomorrow, a week after proceedings began.

The hearing had to be postponed twice, but it finally went ahead last Monday.

City Press has learnt that the SA Football Association (Safa) had called on four witnesses to testify against the beleaguered coach.

They included members of the media department and two high-ranking Safa officials.

According to a Safa insider, tomorrow should be the last day of the hearing, after it was adjourned on Friday.

However, the official, who did not wish to be identified, said the association was pushing for a tougher sentence and viewed his misconduct in a serious light.

“He is up against it and I don’t see him getting off scot-free. It has been a long time coming. He just played into their hands and now he must face the consequences. But whichever way it goes, I hope he learns his lesson,” said the insider.

Mashaba is facing charges of gross misconduct, insubordination and bringing the association into disrepute. This was after Mashaba went on a tirade, calling people names and accusing the association’s leadership of not supporting him. He apologised for his remarks, but was suspended with immediate effect and missed Bafana’s friendly game against Mozambique.

Last week, City Press reported that the coach had proposed a settlement, which was not entertained as the association wanted to go ahead with the hearing.

The source described the hearing as a tough one, with witnesses being grilled for hours.

“The association called four credible people to the stand who were in Polokwane and witnessed everything that happened. They gave a good account of what happened as they had been close to the action.”

Mashaba’s matter was not on the agenda of yesterday’s annual Safa congress.
