Photographer of the year

CityPress - - Trending - – Garreth van Niekerk

This was the year of photography. Not only did the medium gain traction for the local Instagram stars who absolutely slayed (we’re looking at you, Trevor Stuurman), but, incredibly, among the mental health community as well. A big trend that emerged out of 2016 was the general awareness being raised about the crisis in treatment and understanding of mental health. Addressing this using what tools were available to him is the incredible Limpopo-born lensman Tsoku Maela, who turned his camera inward to address his own struggle with mental health. His message of self-love lifted our award, bringing a needed new theme to the foreground and renewing our love for the medium.
