My friend’s drink had less whisky and more ginger ale – definitely a sweeter drink. I’ve always known she’s the nicer one. While we sipped we were plied with canapés – pulled beef spring rolls, fried risotto balls with Parmesan, mini cheesecakes with savoury marmalade, and bite-sized burgers with pitch black buns. After our bespoke drink, we could choose other whisky-infused cocktails. One came with ginger, honey and orange juice, and while I loved the warm citrus flavour, my friend said it tasted like “her grandma’s dresser”. She’s spicy, that one. The other cocktail came in a huge wine-like glass and was all shaved ice, coconut and vanilla. Sorry, whisky purists! After boozing and snacking, we tottered out into the balmy Braamfontein air. Who knew our voices could be used for drinks?
