Thembelani Phoswa (12), Grade 7, Refano Primary
Thembelani’s mother, Florence Phoswa, had hoped that one day her son would be a doctor. She says Thembelani wanted to be a doctor because he wanted to improve the poor health facilities in his community in Verena. On one occasion when his mother got sick but could not get help from the local clinic because of the shortage of nurses, he said: “Mum, don’t worry, one day, I will become a doctor and you will be free from pain!” When Thembelani’s dad was not around, his mum could rely on him to fix broken items such as door handles. He was a dreamer, she says.
